Historically, we've seen very few problems with head gaskets on these cars; almost never happened, despite everyone and his mechanic thinking they had a failure. Indeed, "your head gasket is bad" is a classic way shady mechanics separate you from a chunk of change without doing anything visible.

Recently, though, it seems we've actually had a couple. As the cars age, is this becoming a more common occurrence, or is it just perception? So:

  1. Have you ever thought you had a head gasket failure?
  2. What did it turn out to be?
  3. What engine, how many miles at time of failure?
  4. Was there a proximate cause of failure, like over heating?
  5. How long ago did this happen?

Took my car to a very reliable German car specialist in town. (Merc, BMW, VW)

1) Yes
2) Turned out to be the head gasket, required a machine shop to refinish
3) 1.8t AWM FWD 64,000km or 39,700 miles
4) Overheating, stop oil pressure warning, visible smoke, leaking oil and coolant below, expansion tank darkened by oil mix
5) 2 years.

1) Yes
2) Head gasket failure
3) 1.8T AMB (A4) about 80k miles I believe
4) Some shop topped off my fluids during an alignment (and even used G12!). Shop did not put cap back on properly. Car spewed coolant all in engine bay on my highway drive home, then overheated from lack of coolant.
5) About 2 years ago.

1) Yes
2) Head gasket and had to replace the head as well due to having cracks.
3) 1.8t AEB about 154k give or take.
4) Used some prestone flush to try clean the system out and it said in the directions drive car for 10 miles then flush it out. Car overheated before 10 miles. I WILL NEVER USE THAT AGAIN.
5) About 2 and half years ago.

Small sample size, but 100% due to overheating, rather than "just broke," so far. Hmm...

Trying to see if this is age related eh?
Yup. People on this forum have essentially been saying "the head gaskets never fail" for the seven years I've been here. But recently, we've actually seen a few.
