Have an 02 1.8T Passat. Got chipped (GIAC) for my birthday yesterday:) . The tech told me that the software was the "learning" type and that it would take about 1 tank full of gas to complete its learning. The way the tech put it was that I should feel a noticable difference right away but it wouldn't reach its full power until the software had completed it's learning. I'm kind of bummed out because I really don't notice much of a power increase. I do feel a slight increase around 3500rpm but that's about it. It's just not the night/day difference that I was expecting (I've never driven in a chipped 1.8T so have nothing to compare it with). Also, I haven't taken it much above 4500rpm yet. Any thoughts - or am I just being impatient? Thanks.

I too have a 1.8T 2002 with GIAC software. I noticed a HUGE gain after getting mine done. However, wthe day before I got mine done I replaced the 4 main braided vacuum lines with silicone lines and replaced my DV with the 710N (stock Audi TT diverter valve, can handle a chipped car, since your stock one cant. Its $40 at the dealership).

So, my point is that your problem is likely exactly what scott said, you either have a leak in your braided vacuum lines, and/or you are using your stock DV which is a no-no with a chipped car.

Replace the DV and the braided lines and then you will feel that power!

Date log the following (if you can) get 3rd gear pulls from 2200-6800 RPM.

Measuring block: 003,115,118 - together
Measuring block: 002,020,026 - together

This is the best place to start looking when the chip is not as you think it should be.

Also, which program version did you get. Do you have multipul programs or just 91 octane?

A few months ago I had my 02 1.8T chipped with GIAC (93 octane) and am very happy with the results. Note: I also replaced the hoses with silicone hoses and installed a Forge 007 DV. The difference can most definitely be felt! There is still a bit of turbo-lag on sharp acceleration, but once it hooks up the car really pulls hard!! Particularly noticeable when "passing" on the highway!!! Gotta agree with the others: check your vac lines and do the DV...

Not sure how to do the date log thing you are talking about. I don't know the exact version - but the tech told me that it was variable from 91-94 octane. He said to use 93 octane in my tank and the program would adjust to the 93 octane during it's learning phase.

I guess I will look into replacing the DV since I'm still running the stock one. Thanks for the replies.

It sounds like what the other 1.8T owners suggested: replace vac lines, new DV.
I had GIAC chip in my V6, and had my W8 chipped for 91-93 octane, and 100 octane.
My understanding is that it does take some time for the ECU to adjust the adaptation values(?). I was told a few start cycles/ run at WOT (wide open throttle).
Was also told (at least on the V6) that there weren't different 91 and 93 octane programs - the same program adapts for the octane rating, within reason.

I see that ECS tuning has the TT DV. I see that they sell the silicone vacuum hose by the foot (I don't see any vacuum line "kits"). How many feet would I need to purchase to change out the 4 vacuum lines? Thanks.

$39.95 for the TT DV? Call your local VW dealer and ask how much the 710N diverter valve is. 'Round here they can be had for at least $10 less.

I just got chipped too and while I can definitely feel a difference, it's not as much as I expected. First and second gear are noticeably stronger, still not as much as I expected, but third, fourth and fifth taper off in power very quickly. I got chipped with APR and read that on the highway the acceleration is great but after getting chipped, in 4th and 5th gear on the highway, the turbo makes a lot of noise but doesn't produce much acceleration. If I had a boost leak or bad diverter valve, wouldn't I throw a Check engine light or something? The sound the turbo (at least what I think is the turbo) makes in 4th and 5th at WOT is really loud since chipping. Is this normal?
99% of the time, when u have a boost leak you will not get a check engine light. If the turbo is being very loud, then u likely have a leak. The loud sound isn;t the turbo, its the air escaping from the hole!

It's been a week now since the chip install, and it does seem a little stronger now. I ordered a TT DV and some silicone tubing, and will get those installed in a week or so. Hopefully that will get me up to full power  . I'll let y'all know the results.
