Good News!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember last week when I said my car died and it was beyond repair and the mechanic said I needed a valve job or a new engine and you guys said that was crazy and I should take my car somewhere else and I did. I brought my car to Langan VW in Vernon Ct. Well they called me today and told me good news!!!!!

They fixed the problem:wrench:!! It turns out the coolant temp sensor went bad and that caused the engine to flood out every time you tried to start it. So I need new plugs, oil change, and the sensor. Should have cost me $400-450, but the other mechanic took the valve covers off and they need to put that back with new gaskets and some other part, in the end I am out a little more than a grand. That's a lot better than having a new engine put in the car for $7000:thumbup:.

Thanks for all your help and advice!

Cool. Call the other guy and ask him for your money back cause he was wrong.
The other shop just cost you a whole pile of money. A bad CTS would have showed up right away with the scan tool if they had bothered to look, and it's a known issue with that vintage of B5.

And I'd be curious to know how that shop was so sure you needed a valve job since no work was done on them, yet the car now works.
I know it is shady and I am never going there again.
$450 for oil change, plugs, and cts? Sounds just a bit high to me. But they call them stealershipsfor a reason, I guess.
something about the 40 psi compression per cylinder was the first clue. those guys are THIEVES.

Bill, hang around here so you can learn what's what, ok?
95$ an hour labor.

I just happy I get my car back and it wasn't a major engine failure. Look at it however you want.
^ if your happy with it thats all that matters. Congratulations! I always tell people the amount of information you can learn on a good form is amazing.
I will probably be pissed when I pay for it but for now ill smile.
That's still a high figure for the work done, but damn I'm glad the other shop didn't rape you into $7,000 worth of repairs for a new engine installed.

Just like Jay said, stick around here to learn a thing or two. It'll pay off for sure

If I had to pay back in shop rates what I've saved by picking the brains of the good people of this forum, I'd be even poorer than I already am. I've saved tons of frustration and money by using my google-foo and asking lots of dumb questions here. Thank god for Passatworld!
Passatworld. the wise older brother you never knew you had (minus the public humiliation and noogies... :p)

I don't mean to piss on your parade. But learn here how to do a few things on your car, and you will quickly realize you will save beau coupe bucks doing things yourself.

^^^ I'm not so sure about that!?!
I hear ya loud and clear. Looking to get a Vag diagnostic tool so i can do more. Right now all I do myself is oil, filters, brakes, and tires. I learn from my mistakes. I could have saved a lot if I just left it and diagnosed it myself. Live and learn.

At least you're doing more than 95% of car owners.
If your with a visa or mastercard, I'd just call them to complain about the service you recieved and see if you can get your money back for wrongful insight into a repair. its like they were trying to swindle you.
Also there are tons of locals in New England, we have occasional garage days where you can probably learn a thing or two, and even work on your car with people who can guide you.

That's how I started learning the ways of the VAG ;)

I think I will have to check out a garage day.

This is exactly my experience ! Even I once paid a Dealer to change out a corner marker bulb...what a rip-off that was, but I know better now and have gone on to learn and save myself $ THOUSANDS!
