Georgia students could graduate from high school without learning much about evolution, and may never even hear the word uttered in class.

New middle and high school science standards proposed by state Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox strike references to "evolution" and replace them with the term "biological changes over time," a revision critics say will further weaken learning in a critical subject.

Outraged teachers already have told the state it is undercutting the science education of young Georgians.

"Just like any major issue people need to deal with, you need to know the facts," said David Bechler, head of the biology department at Valdosta State University. A member of the committee that worked on the biology standards, Bechler said he was stunned to learn that evolution was not in the final proposal.

What facts? Isn't the whole idea of humans evolving from monkeys a theory??

Evolution is a FACT. The fossil record doesnt lie. The people who call evolution 'just a theory' probably didnt take any biology classes in highschool or college..(or arent very smart to begin with...)

Anybody catch "Bullshit" on showtime? They had an episode on this very subject. But I think it was florida schools being forced to teach "creationism" along side evolution. Scary. This is another reason political correctness will be the eventual downfall of western civilization (see, the stupidity swings both ways)

I wasn't talking about evolution per se. I was talking about Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

But they (Georgia) may have been talking about evolution in general. No argument there.

Evolution occurs, that is a fact. Just ask the drug resistant bacteria. Evolution as the origin of man is STILL a theory though. There are many gaps in the fossil record.

Facts in science are things you can observe (i.e. changes in morphology over time in the fossil record) the explanation for why you see what you observe are theories.

A good theory, not only should explain the facts, it should also have predictive ability on what should happen.

why do you think human evolution is any different?

here's a good article explaining the evolutionary family tree

I'm not seeing the proof of evolution being the origin of man in that article. What am I missing? And why does it say evolution theory at the top? :poke:

Again, any explanation of observations is called a theory. Evolution is an explanation of observed facts, just as the theory of relativity is one.

You'll find answers to your questions there. Lots of good stuff there

Here's the conclusion to another article there, on the theory of evolution as fact:

"Like every other science, there is scientific debate about some aspects of evolution, but none of these debates appear likely to shake the foundations of this field. There exists no other scientific explanation that can account for all the patterns in nature, only non-scientific explanations that require a miraculous force, like a creator. Such super-natural explanations lie outside of science, which can neither prove nor disprove miracles. Science provides us with a compelling account and explanation of the changing life on Earth. It should also remind us of our good fortune to have come into being and our great responsibility to ensure the continuity of life."

Yet still a theory, which was all I was pointing out.

What about intelligent design?? Let's face it, the most intelligent design of all is one that can adapt to its surroundings and reproduce those traits. Sounds like evolution to me!

Talk about separation of church and state. Where are the freaking atheists/anarchists/ACLU on this one? Friggin' creationism is teaching religion in schools!

(sorry, but I couldn't resist. I'm a scientist! I want to study your reactions to my post so I can determine if you are adapting or not. Then I will study your kids.) :p
