Slightly off topic, but what do you do with a bible after a dog has chewed it? Also, the dog is not gay, just enjoys a little leg now and then.
Use it as rolling paper. The papers are super thin and it works perfectly... or so I've heard ;)

save for when the fellow starts waving his book about his religion around and insisting some people don't deserve the same rights, because he believes his book says so. I don't care about his children's intelligence or his wife's looks - whatever he says is right in that arena.

With the exception of a few that are abusive at face value (yes, my call), I respect all religions. It's the followers where I have the problems. The new pope is going to make that very clear for the catholic religion. Folks like to hide behind the religion to further their own messed up hybrid belief system. The new pope is going the Mary Magdalene route and I think I'm going to enjoy his tenure. Won't help some catholic haters, but you can't please everyone. He's sure going to leave some catholics scratching their heads. They'll be saying "just when I thought it was okay to dislike gays"...

I think that is pretty much what the quote means. You are happy to respect the fellow's theory on his wife's beauty but not up to the point he wants her picture on a public billboard promoting local tourism. Same with the smart kids. You can tell the fellow you are sure his kids are intelligent, until he insists you give one a job.

I got it, Matt. just wanted to point out that I personally don't care for the intolerance some people show in the name of the book inspired by the invisible dude in the sky, especially in this matter.

Ok, well lets say the big bang theory or whatever view you hold on creation has a male and female reproducing.

Without religion, there is no moral compass. And yes of course we need direction to tell us what is right and wrong, otherwise there would not be any action that is labeled right or wrong because there is no point of reference.

I am sorry to inform you that the founding fathers were in fact religious, please read any founding documents and tell me how many times the word God appears.

However misguided you feel my sense of truth is, I have the bible on my side that has over 40 books was written over a period of 400 years by 66 different authors that all tell the same story.

Again thats like saying one does not need a compass to know where North, South,East, West is. Without the compass there is no direction.

If you are going to tell me an analogy does not work you need to throw me a bone as to why. I think that is a good one.
Whoa... being an Atheist, and knowing many Atheists and Christians... I can say with 100% honesty, that people who don't believe in Sky Cake are way nicer/better people
than those who do. Religion is just a way to hide behind your backwoods ass thinking... Atheists do nice things, because doing NICE things is the right thing to do.
Christians try to do Nice things, because they are afraid that if they don't some Red Assed dude with horns is going to butt fuck them for life....

Just the other day, I made an off the cuff snide comment that the bible was fiction, and some Bible Loving, Good Christian Girl told me that I was going to burn in hell
and that it was just the Devil using me to further his propaganda.

I mean, come on! Who thinks like that.

Quick question for all the religious people out there...
why is it, that your "God" isn't in 100% of the homes, why are there other religions? Why are there religions that pre date Christianity... that have the same story line... IE Virgin Birth

I know, I know... I'm on my soap box now.
Back to the point in hand

There should not even be a term Gay Marriage...its just MARRIAGE.
If you're Gay, you don't go Gay Grocery Shopping, or you don't go Gay Dog Walking...
Why should ones actions, be described by how they live their personal life...
I have always, and will always believe that any Human, no matter their Color, Race, Sexuality... have every right to do what they want, no matter how other people think or feel about it.
Get married, raise kids, run for office...
I don't care, and neither should anyone else.

That's all I have to say for that, right now Im going to go play Straight Call of Duty.

This rant gives atheism a bad name. Consider that the act of ranting on the topic is possibly what gives people the bad taste, not as much as the content? Respect works both ways. It's a shame that your experience with folks has given you the idea that people with religious leanings are inferior to atheists, but just wondering, how do you identify the religious experience of hundreds, or thousands, of people you come into contact? Facial recognition? Odor? Since your rant seems to focus on christians, how do you feel about jews, or muslims, or sikhs? How do they stack up to atheists?

I don't dislike religious people at all, and I never said that at any point... this was a discussion about gay marriage, and my point was that religious people hide behind their religion, in order to make decisions and judgements on things. Some of my best friends are religious, and it does not bother me one bit... if you read the whole post you would have saw that I even said that it doesn't matter, race, color, or sexuality...

My main point is, that religious people use their faith and hide behind it as a way to be biggots or assholes...

Not all of them, but I find it sad that religious people think that agnostics or atheists are pretty much scum because they have no "morals"

To which I said that atheists do good things because it'd the right thing to do, snd religious people do good things in order to hang out and get free sky cake.

Further more, why is it that when an atheist speaks up about being against religion he is considered a dick... but when someone says something against atheists, they are just exercising their faith... talk about a double standard

I think you'll find that there is a pretty well educated citizenry here on PW; we get the Sky Cake reference. At issue with your statements is not the invalidity individual beliefs, i.e. atheism or theism, but a blanket statement painting every member of any social or ethical construct as being uniformly guilty of a certain behavior. Nobody said a word calling you out about atheism; many members here are not religious. Many are. The belief that tends to be constant here at PW, however, is that broad strokes, ("people who don't believe in Sky Cake are way nicer/better people", "Religion is just a way to hide behind your backwards ass thinking", and your eloquent yet spurious logic invalidating religion because belief is not universal) tend to do a poor job of painting an accurate picture. The fact is, nobody has a firm grasp of the Big Question and it may be that none of us is correct, atheist or saint. I tend to distrust anyone who thinks that they have the absolute Truth cornered. Absolutes are almost always incorrect.

All this is aside from the original issue of gay marriage, which I agree should just be marriage. Hackles started getting raised, I think, because your argument was a little inflammatory and disrespectful of the deeply-held religious beliefs of a HUGE portion of the world's population, many of whom, as I do, agree with you on this particular issue. It's your particular brand of soap box that's stinking the place up!

All I meant was, Atheists do good to do good...
Religious people do good, in order to hang with Jesus...

When you have an ulterior motive for doing something good, you should not get credit for said good deed.

I'm not saying ALL atheists are amazing people, and I'm not saying all religious people are assholes...
Like I've said, some of my best friends are very religious(they also believe the earth is 10,000 years old and humans hung out with dinosaurs)

The thing that pisses me off about how religious people start to throw the bible at you, when you debate a topic about Gay Marriage(Marriage)
is that... the 4,000 other parts of the bible that contradict what they use to denounce the thing you're debating...

IE(yes I know it's 3 examples, and not 4,000)
Kind Solomon had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines...yet "Gay" Marriage will destroy the sanctity of Marriage.
Genesis 19:31-35 – Lot’s Daughters Sleep With Their Father... yet, if two men or two women want to have sex, its a sin.
How about the relationship between King David and Jonathan...
