I have a 2004 GLS 1.8t passat and i’m wondering what I should check and possibly replace. I want my car to last few years longer and i want to repair the parts that are about to fail before they cause major damage.
As someone who has looked over literally thousands of Passats in junkyards all across the country, I can say the repair costs for the following issues are the ones that doomed otherwise good Passats to the boneyard:
1. Bad automatic transmission
2. Bent valves from a neglected timing belt
3. Oil starvation/low oil pressure
4. Prolonged overheating
5. Clogged catalytic converters (V6 engines)
So fix significant leaks, do your fluid changes regularly and change the timing belt and tensioners at less than 90k mile intervals.
