As part of my '99 "restoration project" after pulling the carpet (the block and heads are at the shop getting zero-timed. Thanks KSEADUB and AndreasPassat for the inspiration, I'm now going deeper into the rabbit hole!) I found this while cleaning. This view is of the passenger side floor inboard of the front seat rail looking back to front. The hole is where a plug goes, it was there, just loose. But what is all the tar-like stuff? That's the only area on the entire floor that has it. It didn't come through the carpet, no evidence of that. Comes off easy with a plastic scraper but what the heck is it?

Yep...same goes for under the rear seat bench. And unless you go back with something like Dynamat or other weighty soundproof material, the road noise (post-project completion) will make your ears say Hyundai or Mazda.

That's the weird part, the VW version of Dynamat is everywhere in the car. I find it hard to believe that all of the tar-like sound proofing "washed away". I can't find evidence of water intrusion anywhere. No water stains, corrosion, nothing. Module boxes and contents are pristine.

Probably a mixture of the sound proofing, Juke pad (The thick padding that is on the backside of the carpet) along with years of dirt. At one time someone may have spilled a lot of soda. Cleaned the carpet but never pulled it to clean under it.
