it was by far the best time i had ever had in my entire life, simply amazing. I was allowed 4 runs and i lost about 8 second from the first to last one. It was simply the most fun for 30 dollars possible. But, sadly, i now realize that i NEED better tires, the understeer was incredibly bad. Oh well, i still beat a porsche carera (the driver was poor)

 A blast, isn't it? Are you on the stock conti's? I am still on them and the level of grip (what is this thing you call "grip"?) is underwhelming. I am trying to get more Atlantans to come out and race with me.

You don't need better tires to balance out the car. You just need to figure out the right tire pressures to run.

The goal is to maximize the traction in the front, and to reduce traction in the rear until the car is balanced (yes, it sounds retarded, and it is, frankly...but that's the price you pay for autocrossing a Passat). You can go drastically above or below "standard" pressures to achieve that loss of grip.

Pretty much all stock B5/B5.5 except the W8 compete in GS. IIRC, the W8 is in FS (under the category of "V8 sedans, pick-ups, and sedan-derived convertibles NOC").

When I autocrossed my B5 on my Falken 512's, I had the fronts up in the 47-49 Psi region. The rears I kept down under 30.

Wow. The Civic on street tires got 6th in RAW time? That's a 108 hp of groundstomping thunder... :eek:h: Musta been a tight course.

STS rules dictate that you can't change motors, transmissions, final drives, or anything. Perhaps they were running smaller diameter tires, but at that level, you'll rarely find people that cheat blatently. The whole key to being able to get into 3rd gear is to carry more speed through the twistier parts. :)

Regarding class, I am pretty darn sure the MBC only puts you in SP, not SM (new rule this year), so you should be in DSP. That class has a better PAX adjustment, which wouldn't have bumped you up any in the standings, but it moved you to only .007 seconds behind the eclipse, instead of .3XX seconds.

Regarding the civic, it probably has a professionally prepared, corner-balanced, well sorted race suspension, intake and exhaust, the best ST legal tires and was definitely well driven.

Nope. MBC is SM. If you get a chip, then you could pass off in DSP...but since you added something not in the ruleset, its SM.

i didn't want to start a new thread, but i have a chance to get a set of BFGoodrich g-force T/A kd. i've driven a jetta with the same tires, and they gripped much better.
they are 195/65/15, my question is where should i start as far as tire pressure. (fpsi/rpsi) 30/25, 35/30?

You are still probably going to run F/R wider than that. 45/35 is a pretty good starting point. Chalk your tires and see if you are rolling onto the sidewalls or not. You may end up with as much difference as 50/30 (check Notapreppies post#5 above). I am driving tomorrow myself, so wish me luck.

Playing with tire pressures on a 15" or 16" wheel/tire combo on a front-heavy, front-drive car is so easy compared to doing it with an 18" wheel/tire on a balanced, rear-drive car.

I'm really struggling with getting pressures just right on my RX-8.

did it again. ran 40(f) 30 (b) this time, handleing was far more neutral then before, but i think a neuspeed rear sway bar will help tons. now if i could keep it on course. So much fun!!!!!
