side marker lights have a habit of sometimes popping off at high speed. that is what may have happened to it.
Fed up Rant
So I'm a little peeved. About 3 weeks ago I went to go take my wife to work and what do I see? the front drivers side quarter panel just behind the corner light is squeezed in and white paint "accenting" my blue anthracite pearl. 
The paint was rubbed off easily, but the dent is still there and my corner light now has a crack. Then this morning, on the same side, my side marker turn signal is missing. WTF!!?? I know my car is way far from immaculate. Its a 2001 b5 and shows the scars of being in NYC; but it's new to me. I feel like its a lot of aggravation trying to have a nice car in NYC. (not that mine is nice - it's a stocker for now) It happens that I was planning to switch to aftermarket headlights, corners and side markers but this just makes me think twice. So I'm angry at what happened, but in a way more angry at the fact that I have to think twice about modding my car for fear of what might happen to it while it is parked.

When I'm in NY with my car, I never leave it parked without me either being in it or a meter away from it!

No it was there for sure when I parked on that Saturday. I didn't move it on that Sunday at all.
