Exhaust modification suggestions 1.9tdi?

I have a 1.9 tdi sedan from 2000, I was thinking about installing a rev limiter to get the "popcorn" sounds. However I don't know if the sound will be any good with a stock exhaust. I'm thinking of doing a muffler delete but I also dont want tons of black smoke coming out of my car while I'm driving. Does anyone have experience with modifying the sound to their 1.9 tdi?
