a friend of mine's boyfriend's mother has a passat (my friend doesn't know what year, engine or transmission it has but will find out) whose engine wouldn't stop running when the ignition was turned off. the car ran for half an hour before shutting down  . the car ran fine the next day and the dealer couldn't find anything wrong with it. i thought i remembered a similar thread but i couldnt find it after multiple searches. Has anybody had a similar problem, or does anybody remember that thread or have any idea why this happened? i will post the model year, engine and transmission type as soon as i find out.thanks everyone

Ignition switch. Overheating wouldn't cause it because pulling the ignition switch SHOULD cause the fuel pump to stop and the injectors to stop pulsing. "Dieseling" is only an issue with carbureated cars w/ a cam-driven fuel pump.

It happen to me too when I drove up to Mt Mauna Kea at above 9000M elevation
in Hawaii and the damn engine just would not stop after I parked the chrysler 2.7
auto cabrio (Rental). Just locked it up with the alarmed unhooked from the key
chain and when about my tour. Came back engine still RUNNING but everything works and
A okay for the next couple of days that I had it.

Strange.....?????

Stormysea - I've been on that road to the observatories... personally I wouldn't drive it using a rental car with unknown brake quality. It's a loooooong way down. You've got some cajones. :)

This has to be a short somewhere in the ignition... if you keep 12v going to one of the wires, the engine will keep running when you pull the key out. (Just like a turbo timer :) ) Did the climate/AC and radio systems shut off even thought the engine kept running? That would be another sign of a turbo-timer-like ignition short.
