Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190?

I'm noticing some possible similarities between the gauges of my new Passat and my past Ford Trucks. Ford truck owners were surprized to learn that the temperature gauge was misleading -- in that it acted as expected during the warm-up period -- but that, once up to temperature, the gauge -- by design -- never moved off of the 'normal' position -- until and except the engine overheated -- which then caused the needle to go to the 'overheat' range.

My 2-month-old Tradewind's temp gauge never moves off of the 190 position -- and when monitoring the OBD-II with an AutoXray tool -- the temperature reported is nowhere near the 190 reported/indicated on the gauge.

Sooooooooo...

Has anyone ever actually done a temperature test of the temperature gauge?

Ford, apparently wishing to avoid questions like: "Gee, my temperature gauge went up a little yesterday in the Mojave Desert, Is my radiator correct?", changed their gauge so that it merely looked like an analog gauge -- but was effectively a stationary gauge with a needle -- once reaching 'normal' operating temp.

Oh, by the way, Ford's Oil Pressure gauge was (at least on my 97 and Y2K trucks) truly an on/off indicator -- which was also confirmed to be on at pressures of somewhere around 5 PSIG and above.

i am curious as to what readings you are getting temp wise?

my gauge sometimes is below or above 190 but not much....Wonder what i am really reading

Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? (Z28Driver)

Ambient Temps (MI) were in the high 60's -- and I think the temps reported by the OBD-II were 209 - 213 -- and I was interested in seeing whether it continued to heat after shutting down the engine (didn't).

I'm trying to confirm/refute that there is an electric pump which continues to circulate coolant for several moments (minutes?) after shut-down.

I saw mine creep up a little bit once when it was 100+ outside and I was sitting in a loooooong drive-through line.
Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? ('03 Tradewind)

I was wondering the same thing. The only time mine's not on 190 is when I start up.
Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? (baker999)

Sure does move off 190 on mine...on account of the no-good, low-down thermostat sender.

When it did work, in never moved off 190.

How long before it reaches 190? It should take at least a few minutes to warm up.

Mine is always at a steady 190 too, but not until I drive it a few miles first.
Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? (trlyka)

I've only gotten mine hotter than that on the track. Well, on the track and driving up I-70 (mountains) when my BPV was failing.

Ok -- so no real answers yet. How 'bout:

Where is the sending unit?

Has anyone added an additional (auxiliary) temperature gauge?

While we're at it -- has anyone added a transmission temp gauge?

Is the transmission (TIP) cooled? Does it have an external cooler; is it air-to-oil -- or water-to-oil -- or integral with the radiator?

Probably much-ado-about-nuttin -- but, then again, this IS a techie forum, right?

Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? ('03 Tradewind)

It's idiot-proofed. Heavily weighted towards the center position so it won't move unless there's a big change. I don't know the logic behind that decision, but apparently it's common these days. I think it's stupid. Probably costs more to engineer them that way too.

I think there is an OEM oil-to-air tranny cooler, but femi is the one to ask about that. Do a search to find all the aftermarket tranny cooler install topics.
Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? ('03 Tradewind)

As per my knowledege the temp sensor is in the coolant chamber. So it manily reads the coolant temp. Unless you have a problem with the engine it does not move much. Its not a true engine temp sensor as such!

Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? ('03 Tradewind)

Mine pegged when the water pump seized so I know it's working!
Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? (sschragger)

Mine goes 0 - 190 -0 - 190 -0 - 190.

Sender is shot.
Re: Does Temp Gauge ever move off 190? ('03 Tradewind)

The sending unit on the V6 is near the rear of the engine on one of the coolant tubes (metalic tube).

The coolant recirculation pump is there (at least on the V6) because you will see coolant continue to circulate in the reservoir after the engine has been turned off.
