my B5 1.8t is a 2000, engine code APU and it's DBW. Easiest way to tell is remove drivers side lower dash housing and see if a cable is connected to the end of the throttle pedal

Anything post late 99 is DBW. I believe the cluster is a good indication of DBW also. If you have the red LED display in the middle, then DBW.

i have a '00 1.8t and it's DBW. you can also check the ECU model. if it's 4B0 906 018 BG(BH) then it's DBW, but the above methods are easier.

Look at the throttle body. Mine is non-DBW and I can see the throttle cable coming from it. I'd assume that you wouldn't if you have DBW. Maybe I'm wrong??
