I have a 99 B5, that suddenly started shuttering and lost power, also had a strong smell of fuel. The CEL came on blinking afterwards then went off after a restart, but the problem has come back and stayed since then. Pulled the code and got a 0304- cylinder 4 misfire and a knock sensor code (which has gone away and not come back). I've read other threads about the ICM for cylinder 2, has anyone else had this problem for other cylinders. I've tried switching the coils and spark plugs from good cylinders but still get the same CEL on cylinder 4. Any thoughts, thanks in advance.

spark plugs looked ok, need to be changed. But when I moved one from another cylinder still got the cylinder 4 code, so probably not the spark plug or the coils, which I switched also.

I'd still check out the ICM, especially if switching the plug and coil didn't move it.
Agree. Get a Huco brand ICM for 125$ or less and give it a try, or else swap for a few minutes with somebody you know with a passat. If your car still has the original ICM, you are going to need the replacement soon anyway, even if that turns out not to be the problem this time.

I checked the ICM as instructed on one of the other forums. The only one that did not work was the #4 plug, so it looks like it is the ICM. If thats it won't have to take it in and will save a lot of money.

Thanks!
