I owned a 2000 GLS 1.8t and it never made this noise.
I have now a 2003 GLS 1.8t ans it has 5400 miles on it. I noticed that when the temp is around 28 deg or less, when I start it when the engine is cold I hear a growling noise from the engine for about 1.5 or 2 seconds. It never does it on a warm start up. WTF. :nervous:

Sounds like the secondary air system pump.
It cuts in at low temp and pumps air into the exhaust upon startup.

Yeah, my car did that when it got cold. It still does it actually, but i dont know WTF it is. It sounds like a loud humming, and then it goes away. Kinda worried about it.

It's definitely the SAIP kicking in. When it is semi-cold on a cold start up it makes less noise - when it's REALLY cold on a cold start up it could sound like a growling to a ratchet turning type noise.
