I used clearcoat on mine. It only improved the luster a little bit. I have no idea how some get theirs so shiny, but a clear coat will halp a little bit. Good luck.

Clearcoat painted engine covers?
I am almost finished painting my engine covers, but it doesn't have any luster. From what I have seen in pictures here on the website, they look shiny, should I finish with a clearcoat?

What sheen was the paint? That will have a huge impact on the potential luster even after clearcoat is applied no?
Are you sure they weren't buffed out first? Thats what gives that mirror finish. Then follow with a clear coat.
