Cleaning the turbo oil feed lines?

Hello,

B5, 1.8T

Is it too risky to clean the turbo oil lines for 250.000mil- 14 year old turbo passat? There are no symptoms of turbo going bad but just in case, preventative maintenance.

Have a slight sludge problem though.

I would doubt any pm would hurt, however if dealing with stock hardware on lines may require elbow grease and patience.

Im sure if you run auto rx or something similar it would help out. I just replaced a shot turbo with 147,000 miles. I took the feed line completely off (kind of a pain, I removed the intake cuz I had other things to service). I shot some carb cleaner in it and let it sit in there for a minute, then ran water straight thru it. It was surprisingly very clean.

Anyone of those methods would work.

By the feed line, you mean the one that is attached to the oil pan, which is the return line? In the picture http://repairguide.autozone.com/zne...0c152/80/1b/ff/0b/medium/0900c152801bff0b.gif

it is number 14.
14 in that picture is part of the return line. The supply line is not shown in that picture. The supply runs from above the oil filter, around the head and over to the turbo. The return line runs from the turbo, down into the side of the oil pan.

#14 is the return line like Steve said. I cleaned the oil supply line, aka oil feed line.

So, in the diagram here

Which line is more prone to getting clogged by sludge, coked turd etc? The number 12 or no 1? I will clean accordingly.
Line 12 would be, as the coke is formed in the glowing hot turbo. But then, it is a fairly large line that allows coke particles to drop into the sump (which of course is how they get into the pick-up screen as the oil pump sucks oil out of the sump).

You have to pull the turbo to remove the return line.
Snap, I did not know that the turbo is supposed to be removed. Well lets see.. Thanks Zak

You think that if this oil feed line gets clogged it could cause a low oil pressure scenario?

No. If anything it would raise oil pressure. Pressure = flow+ resistance.
Yeah, but only a very localized oil pressure increase, and maybe not really at all since there are plenty of other pathways for oil to flow. A clogged turbo line likely has no effect on oil pressure at all, until they dump enough sludge into the sump to block the pickup screen - the standard low pressure scenario.
