I went and looked a a civic today as I don't need much room. I asked why the manual shows lower milage than the automatic they gave me the salesmen crap about how autos are more efficient than manuals etc. Can someone give me the REAL reason for this not the salesmen crap, please?

I would assume gearing. Newer autos are pretty good though when it comes to mileage.

I assume thats highway MPG and the difference would be gearing like postman said a taller gear in an automatic would give you less RPM's thus burning less fuel

yep, the autos are geared for MPG ans the manuals for take-off.

I got 34 MPG out of my auto '06 Civic... Kind of odd because I get 24-25 MPG out of my Pilot regularly on the same commute.

If you need it for long commutes take it out on the highway for a few miles and note the road noise.

Yep, rpm's. The city mileage may be a little lower, I haven't looked.

And auto's today are more efficient than 20y ago.
