Catastrophic transmission/clutch failure @ 105k miles

My 2006 needs a new transmission, clutch and flywheel. This failed catastrophically as my daughter was starting to slow from 55, approaching the turn into our driveway. I think she tried to go from 6th to 2nd at about 45mph, she claims it never went into gear (go figure!). Anyway, according to Volkswagen the clutch was "melted" to the flywheel and 5th and 6th gear are out of commission in the tranny.

This car has always driven great, never any pre-warning of transmission problems, I'm the second owner- having had the car less than a year and the service history is well documented from the p.o. Unfortunately our full-coverage insurance policy only covers collision, theft or vandalism. I'll be squeezing $1000 out of my daughter...

A used transmission with 65,000 miles on it would save me $1000 installed. All the work would then total about $4500. OUCH!

So there, just needed to vent!:banghead:

Clutch melted to the flywheel? Have you checked any of this out? They are implying that the pedal is floppy....no action at all?

I would think that going into 2nd at 45 would be no big deal......barely 5k rpm IIRC.
yeah the pedal wasn't active, it was on the floor and I could pull it up to the normal position by hand but there was no "spring" in it, it would just go back to the floor and stay there. I haven't seen the parts yet, although they are saving them all for me to look at.

If she was riding the clutch maybe it could have built up enough heat to melt to the flywheel but I don't think she would have been doing that...

How about 5th and 6th gear failing?

I dunno, we shall see when I pick it up. I would hope I could trust the dealership... isn't that why they charge more?!
Did a stealership tell you this or did you investigate yourself?
how did they test 5th and 6th if the clutch is shot and tranny out of the car?

VW's new clear transmission case
When they replaced the clutch and flywheel then went for a test drive they couldn't shift into 5th or 6th gear. They checked the linkage but it was fine. I doubt they cracked it open to inspect the gears themselves as that would only add to labor. Their suggestion is to replace the transmission. I like the idea of a see-through transmission case. Brilliant!

Shoot, what does your daughter need more than four gears for? Let her run with only those for awhile so she'll appreciate getting fifth and sixth back later on.
That's funny... when we first got the car I was used to our old 1990 5-speed Jetta. 5th in that car was just like 4th in the Passat. But no, I want MY car back! ;)
