So, it happened, my car died. This is my second Passat and it's died on me now for the first and only time. It overheated today and the heads are bent, oil in the coolant etc.

After a 3-hour ordeal a mechanic advised me to total it and take what I can get.

Should I sell it to a scrap yard? Part it out?

Looking for some advisement, thanks everyone.

1.8t ? V6 ? Personally depends on the condition. A used 1.8t motor from a running car around here costs me about 700 bucks with all the accessories.

V6 I'm not sure about.
It's a V6 with 151k on it. The interior is in really good condition, no rips in the leather, everything works, it looks great. Exterior has some issues, missing fog light surround and ejected rear side markers but nothing major.

A running V6 costs about $900 or less down here, but it depends on the condition of the rest of the car.

For the 2003 GLX you list in your profile, as long as you like the car and it's otherwise in good condition, a used replacement engine is by far the best option financially. Around here, that would likely be about $2000 installed; what kind of car would you get for $2K?

If you don't want to do that, parting it out would be most remunerative, but a large PITA. Scrapping it would get you perhaps a couple of hundred bucks. Selling as is to a private buyer, somewhere in between.

Yet another opinion,
Around my area a complete car that is non-drivable will net you about $500.
You can surely get more than $500 parting it out. But obviously that requires time, space and labor and you may not see that $500 right away, as selling parts takes time.
If the car is still in halfway decent shape, I would by another junk vehicle, something that has been bashed at any other point than the front end, pull the motor out of that and swap it into your car. Then you can dump the donor for junk and still probably get a few hundred for it.
I see cars that are for sale around $1500 - $2000 that could be a donor car.
You can't buy to much of a car for that kind money.

Not directly related to your issue at hand but, something to consider.
My '98 GLS I bought for $1000 with a bad motor (valve train was toast), swapped in a different motor out of a car that I had bought for my wife, her car turned out to be a total piece of crap, pulled the motor out of that car and swapped it into my '98.
Now my '98 runs great.
