i have replaced the engine mounts with meyle and also the transmission and snub mounts. its still the same. what can be the problem? i have a 1998 1.8t automatic passat. this shaking is incredibly annoying.

Are your plugs new/good? Check the gap on them.
Plugs are new, no need to gap. All cylinders are firing. No codes thru vag com. If I put in neutral the car stops shaking.
sounds like a snub mount/motor mount to me

Another problem commonly described here involves solid aftermarket axles. They vibrate when held by the brakes at rest in just the way you're describing, while the hollow OEM versions do not. Any recent axle or CV joint work?
In addition to aftermarket axles, aftermarket motor/snub mounts will increase vibration. Most are either junk (solid, not liquid-filled like the originals) or "performance" (much stiffer than OEM). I went with genuine VW mounts when mine failed.

Thant said, these cars tend to vibrate at idle when in gear. The transmission drags on the engine, trying to stall it. If the transmission is dragging more than usual, or the engine isn't running smoothly, it'll be worse. In my case, changing the spark plugs, cleaning the MAF and throttle body, and changing the transmission fluid all incrementally reduced the vibration.
Will that axle problem cause vibration while stopped in drive and reverse, but not neutral? When I'm at a stoplight, the car vibrates noticeably (not really a problem, but enough to notice), but stops if I put it in neutral.
yea in neutral the driveline isnt connected so the axles arent seeing any forces.

I don't understand it myself, but person after person here has reported vibration, in neutral, with aftermarket axles. One member had a technical explanation; perhaps he'll repeat it.

Yeah that doesn't make any sense for it to be related to aftermarket axles. I'd think engine mounts in that case.

Good to know that's what's probably causing my vibration at least, don't know about OP's.
Im in the same boat as you. Ive also tried mounts, tune-up, transmission service etc. Im pretty sure now its the torque converter. They start to fo that after awhile. My car has 141k so i may buy a transmission as a back up here pretty soon.
