99 Passat 1.8t, manual, AEB, 185K miles (yes, it's old - at that age it could be anything). No check engine light. Original owner, no accidents. No trouble starting.

For the past month or so, my car has been surging at idle. RPMs go between 1000 and 600 or so (820 normally). Starting from a stop, I get bucking and jerking. One trip around town, I gave it gas, it didn't do much, then it lunged forward. Almost like the gas entered the cylinders all at once. No audible vacuum leaks - course everything works fine in your driveway.

I put some BG 44K in. After a tank, I had about 10 trouble-free trips. Today it died in traffic, but I got it started again.

At highway speeds, I can feel it misfire every once in a while, but only 1 at a time.

I'm thinking fuel injectors (they've never been changed), or a weak sending unit in the gas tank. Possibly new spark plugs would help.

A friend said he had the same symptoms when he had a rusty tank in his old pickup.

Just wondering what others have done in this situation.

Pulling the battery cable for a bit then reconnecting should make the throttle body go through an adaptation. You’ll hear it cycle.
