Can I retrofit the original navigation system (RNS MFD)

4646 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Passat2.8
I have a 2004 Passat with aftermarket blaupunkt radio and I wanted to go for the OEM look and fit the original RNS MFD (see in pictures). Will all the functions work as I dont think I have gps installed. Also the radio that I found has a code that the owner doesn't know, nor does he have the VIN number of the vehicle it came from, is it a easy job to get it decoded? Thanks in advance

BTW I know I will have to change the mask and order one that can fit the 2 din radio. Should that require further modifications?
Short answer, it will work-many have done it (Myself included). You must ask yourself what you want more: easy modern functionality, or rarity that is completely OEM.

Primary Downsides:
Same price overall for a decent aftermarket unit.
The latest and final US map updates available are from 2014.
The tech is old, but works fine(slower processor and no touch screen)
The units and add-ons must be sourced from overseas(they are abundant however)

Primary Upsides:
Completely OEM, and works/functions/looks like it belongs.
Rare in the US, has a cool factor.
More expandable than most think for functionality.

If you want to install only the headunit, it is fairly simple if you’ve ever done any wiring, and adapter harnesses are available to make it easier. If you want to add goodies (info in cluster/reverse camera/Bluetooth/etc) it takes some more time and patience than a comparable aftermarket unit(and slight sacrifices must be made since it still is not 100% modern tech).

I can help you if you want this to happen.

Edit: I just saw you are not in the US, I say to go for it.

You have maps that are always updated, and everything available easily to get the job done.

Hi there, I am currently running the standard Navi mfd1 in my Passat b5.5, I have the GPS Ariel connected but the sat nav still doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Can you tell me any more?
What is not working?
Are there any satellites shown in the info screen?
What type of antenna are you using?
Does the rest of the unit function properly?

Sometimes I get only 1 satellite and other times I get 2 or 4, I am using an aftermarket GPS aeriel. It will sometimes pick up my location but as soon as I start driving it doesn't follow me down the road, it just thinks I'm stationary

You need a minimum of three satellites for proper triangulation, so that’s an issue. Tbh, I’d try another GPS antenna; try for a decent brand antenna or if you’re really feeling up to it-the factory antenna (headliner removal in the back).

Also, where did you say that you placed the antenna? If it does not have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky, it will not perform well.
