Picking up either Vulcan 800 Classic or Custom and gonna start chopping it up into a nice bobber in the next few weeks. Anyone with any experience or tips?

I can't help you but I love the look! One of the many things I've wanted to do for years and never got around to.

First off, stop calling it a bobber. ;)

I took a stock 2007 HD sportster and chopped it up a bit.

Did all the work myself (aside from a few machining tidbits). As you can see...she still needs some work, but she runs!

You gonna keep it suspended or go hardtail (Your pic is blocked here at work)?

Dude, I love that! Damn Passat world all gonna make me spend money and shit.
7.62mm ammo box battery holder FTW! That's pretty creative!
50 cal ammo box battery holder FTW! That's pretty creative!
Yep, .50 cal, but that was a bit long, so we took about 1.5" out of it. It's an EFI bike so the battery is in there, the ECU, the bank angle sensor/turn signal module, the EFI piggy back recalibrator...crap like that. I was leaning towards a GI Joe lunchbox, but the metal was too flimsy. ;)
Made the handlebars myself, chopped the cam cover down, made the sissy bar, cut up/mounted the fender, welded up the oil tank/bungs, extended all the wiring and pulled out crap I didn't need, welded in some tubing to stagger the exhaust pipes. Pretty much everything from the seat back was either made, altered, mounted or welded by me.

ChkYaHead...Nice to see that finally done. Did you go with a different frame or weld the hardtail yourself? And, what pipes are those?

This is what we did to my budddies sporty. 99 Custom 883. Next is a 1200 kit, cause it needs the nuts with the look. We planned to go with a Sucker Punch Sally frame. As a test, we mounted struts on it to act as a hardtail. Did 250 miles the next day and he was hurting a little, so we went with Progressive shocks. Now that he is used to it, he may look at the fram again. Its been nice to tool around town on this while he is deployed, but long hauls I pull my Springer out.

So what we did wad get a set of Nightster bars and flip them over. Chopped about 10 inches off of the rear fender. Relocated the tail light and plate to a '34 Ford style, rattle canned flat grey, wrinkle black a lot of chrome (and will do more). Mounted the seat on springs, but it didnt flow right, so it just lays on the frame.

Next is to continue de-chrome, powdercoat wheels (to include spoked rear wheel), 1200cc kit, some cutting of the trans box or primary..can't remember.

You can kind of see the before in the background....mini apes and black

EDIT***

Found some better befores on out trip up to the Poconos, Pa. (ok..now I am just whoring the bikes)

I went with a Kansas Kustoms hard tail kit. Didn't want to deal with titling a frame and all the BS that goes with that.
Pipes are altered Sik Pipes. Just google them..they'll pop up.
There's a site, Jockey Journal that I frequent. Very old school with tons of inspiration. They don't like Jap bikes, but it's still a great site for fabbing ideas and techniques.
Good lookin bikes! I love HDs and I was looking at some sportsters to chop up but its a pain in the ass trying to find an affordable one out in nyc.

Fork reflectors are for nerds btw haha.

I checked out some Vulcan's heavily modded after you posted. Some very cool bikes out there. I'm sure the VTX (Honda V-twin HD copy?) is probably another one people mod into these.

My dad has been trying to get me to buy his FXSTC for awhile now. I wouldn't mind cutting the seat back add some drag bars, ditch some chrome, bobber style rear fender etc. Good looking bike, just not really my thing.

I like that a lot. Well done!

How many burns do you have on your right leg? :)
Check out this Triumph

Beautiful.

I'm a Triumph fan, although my preference is still this:

The speed triple is a cool ass bike, I was torn between the speed tri and the monster 1100S, ended up with the ducati but I still think about the triple now and then... The headlights give it a much better streetfighter look than the Duc.
Sportys are super affordable. I bought my 2007, a year ago, for $5400. What's your year and price range?

J-Rad...so far, not burnt once. I always wear jeans anyway.
I havent seen too many sportsters around nyc for sale for a great price. 5400 for an 07 is outstanding, i have the opprotunity to pick up an 01 vulcan 800 for about 2k with low miles and secretly drop maybe 1k over the course of the summer on chopping her up/parts. I had to so some serious schmoozing with the old'e lady to ok the "possible" addition of a 3rd bike to the stable... the key was telling her it would keep me home working on it, little does she know once its done, i'll be riding much more than i already do...
I still love motorcycles but my wife won't let me. :( SNKVNNM is my 4 wheeled version of a Harley! But nothing beats the look of some of your choppers! You guys rock.

I think I still like the old Cafe Racer; the first time I saw it was in the movie Black Rain (Michael Douglas and a very young Andy Garcia I think.)
I was only 17 or 18 at the time and was pining for a motorcycle; I ended up with a Honda CB500 but lusted for the HD in that movie:

HH just roll home in a bike one day with an extra helmet and take the old'e lady out for a ride. If shes still pissed just tell her you got a kick ass deal on it. If shes still pissed... Tell her OK i'll sell it but it takes 90 days for the title to come in since it was an out of state title purchase... Then enjoy for 90 days and pray she forgets about it or just ends up saying F it keep it.

Eh...2 grand for an 01 Sporty isn't gonna happen ;), but you might be able to snag one for 3.5K if you get lucky.

Anyhow...are you gonna go with a weld on kit? I'd think that would be the most economical and easiest process.
