Last weekend my 2006 Polo Classic sedan had a problem with the boot lock. It would not latch to keep the boot closed.

Upon investigation, I found that the mechanism moves freely, but the rotary latch does not latch properly in the hook. After removing the mechanism and checking it out, I discovered that the plastic coating on the tip of the rotary latch (yellow arrow) broke off and jammed in the corner of the hook (red arrow), allowing only minimal contact between the hook and the rotary latch tip (blue arrow). The smallest force applied to pull the lock open, e.g. the compression force of the boot rubber seal was enough to force it open. After removing the offending plastic cup from its undesired location, the lock functions normally again. I replaced the lock when the dealer got stock as I was concerned that the lock may sometimes not latch properly as the missing plastic meant that the rotary latch does not get rotated far enough to latch every time. But it worked in the interim.
