Blown Bi-Xenons Problem...(Fixed)

2679 Views 41 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  RL331
So after waiting 3 months for my bi-xenons to arrive and installing them about an hour later I didn't know that relay 173 must be pulled out. When I first tested it the headlights lit up fine but now after reading about DRL's I went back to my car and noticed that both the bi-xenon d2s bulbs don't light up. Realizing that I should've probably read about the 173 relay before installing the bi-xenon headlights I am now wondering what I blew. So to those of you that done this error what's blown the ballasts or the bulbs?

the bulbs are blown most likely. pull them out and check first though before you order anything. Make sure the bulbs are shot. If not, then start looking towards the ballasts for problems. I believe the bulbs usually are what the problem is. There are places you can order less expensive replacements. You will then need to consider what you want as far as D2S replacements...4300K are the most white, most light dispersion, the higher level you go, the more blue/purple you go. Some go with the higher numbers for the way the car looks to others, but in my opinion, if you want to maximize your light, the main reason to get Xenon, shoot for replacement 4300K bulbs. You are still looking at around $200 or so for 2 bulbs is my guess.

Hope that helps
cheers

Actually I think it would be the ballasts / igniter that are damaged. The bulbs won't ignite until they have the proper wattage so I would assume that they would be OK. The bulbs tend to outlast any part of the car since there is no filament.

i don't think pulling the 173 relay matters... just taping over the pins would have been sufficient to rid you of your DRL's...
Pulling relay 173 is easier. Its the most definitive way of getting rid of DRLs.

Dave
How is pulling relay 173 ealier than taping over two pins on the back of the euroswitch? How is this better than the taping method?

Abe
Less steps
Open fuse panel, pull relay.

Taping:
More steps, Did the tape stick?

Okay, lets try to stay on topic here!
I've got them and might be of some assistance. Pull relay 173 out and trash it. You won't need it again. You also need to replace both fuses for the headlights. Currently they're 15amp fuses. You NEED to pop 20amp fuses in there. I'm betting you blew the fuses for the headlamps.

Are those fuses number 20 and 21 on the fusecard?
That's them.

Oh, by the way, where did you get the bi-xenon's from? Dirk? Just curious.

No some guy on eBay.de axel15751vw (that's his ebay screen-name). I am not kidding it took this guy to send me the headlights 3 months, he got paid on March 29th (I got the bank transfer papers as proof), and only shipped me the item on May 18th (I got the DHL receipt as proof).
Cool. Let us know if you got them fired up.

I never did that in either my car or my friends car that has the lights now...never had a problem. We only pulled 173, no need to change fuses, at least from my experience with 2 B5.5 housing the same headlamps.
Well I currently have 10 amp and I just pulled them out and they are both blown. I just went and bought 20amp, should I go put the 20amp in or should I go buy 15amp?

Thanks,
Jacob
Go with a 20amp. My buddy who also has the bi-xenons runs 20amp fuses and Dirk told him to put them in. Never had a problem with the 20amp.
Upgrade to the 20AMP. Let's dispell some ignorance in this thread. An HID bulb can blow just as easily as any halogen bulb, and the ballast usually outlast the bulbs.

PhatRabbitzz, I am going to safely say that the bulbs are blown. First check all your connections and upgrade the fuses just for safe measure.

Okay, I installed the headlights, I pulled out the black 173 relay, and I put in two 20amp fuses in box number 20 and 21. Is there anything else I need to do, or is it time to turn the headlights on and see if they work?
Fire them up!!! I'm waiting by this computer to see what happens.
HOLY SWEET *** **** ****** OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
