I saw this oil filter wrench at Pep Boys for $10. Had to try it.

And the money shot:

Worked like a charm! Didn't spill at all, and way better than using plastic bags that wrap around the top as you unscrew the filter and can leak.

The base is your ordinary cup-style filter wrench, and it has a 3/8s square so you can put a handle on it if need be.

With three B5 1.8Ts to maintain (and my neighbor has one too), this will be invaluable.

I forgot to say, it comes in three sizes. The largest one fits the Purolator filter perfectly.

What a great idea! The one thing I've always hated about oil changes on my Passats is the mess from unscrewing the oil filter. I use a plastic bag, but it just doesn't catch all the oil and it's hard to grip the filter. Looks like I'll be heading to my nearest Pep Boys before my next oil change. Thanks for the post and the pics. Have a great Turkey Day!

Looks easier than the cut-out plastic jug. I might have to get one now that I have a 1.8T again and only change the oil once a year.
