My 08 Passat’s battery kicked the can last week, so I replaced it with a new one. After the replacement, I got a power steering amber light and a traction control light. I know this is typical after loosing power, so I went through the process of recalibrating the steering wheel position, and the light turned off. But then it got weird.

When I backed out, I quickly realized I could not turn the wheel to the right, only to the left. I could get maybe 2-3 degrees of steering to the right, while the left would go all the way.

I’ve tried recalibrating 7-8 times now, tried leaving the battery off over night, cleared codes and tried again, same problem everytime.

When I scanned the car these are the codes I got:

P0068 -ECM Power Relay load circuit open
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor - Implausible signal
02557 - installation position of steering angle sensor - upper limit exceeded
01314 - ECM no communication

any help or advice would be appreciated. I only have one shop near me that takes VW and they cost an arm and a leg so I’d love to avoid it. But without a VAGCOM not sure how much I can do. Thanks everyone.

Sounds like you popped a fuse somewhere. Grab a bunch of new ones in different amperages and start running through them. If any are questionable, replace it, even if it doesn't look blown.

Went through every fuse and all looked perfectly fine. Took it into the shop and they said the whole steering rack would need to be replaced. Still seems absolutely crazy to me that a dead battery could fry an entire steering rack. Are these guys bullshitting me or is that a real possibility?
