You remove the bolts, place the strut bar in place, install the bolts without the washers.
That's how you do the A6 bar, but this design is different. It appears to have a single mounting point and I needed a visual because I may have a potential clearance problem from the SC blow-off valve plumbing. :wrench:

It should fit the 2 bolts right behind the 2nd firewall. The question of battery clearance, brake reservoir clearance, battery cover clearance and a/c line clearance are the issues. Some Passats have the a/c line right over the bolt and I had a B5.5 in with a strut bar that would not clear the brake reservoir. It was an 01.5 and everything else fit fine, but the bar was too wide at that point.

Imagine my bar with the front and rear mounts removed.

Ok I'm sorry but can't find any pics when it was installed. Perfect fit on my B5, not sure if B5.5 is exactly the same though.
Also have a B5 OEM grille w/emblem, B5 eyelids and disc changer/tray for sale as well. Also have an OEM DV and thermostat as well. Need these parts gone, any offers? Text me @ 228-731-1168 for more info or pics of anything.
