My wife's car died on the highway Tuesday night. It would sputter a little from time to time when trying to start it on the side of the highway. We had it towed home and after the tow truck left I was able to start it and drive to the end of the street and back. But as soon as I put it in park it died, not to be started again since.

I pulled a code of P0010 which according to everything I can find has to do with the Camshaft Position Actuator. I cleared the code and it has not returned since. I checked the battery and every fuse and they are all good. Yesterday, I shot some starting fluid into the intake and was able to get the car to fire up and run for a few seconds, just to shut off again.

This all made me think the pump was at fault. Checking the voltage at the pump when starting the car, was between 10 and 12 volts. I removed the pressure line from the fuel rail and checked the pressure while starting and it was almost 60psi.

I'm at a loss now. It seems like it is getting fuel and obviously getting spark as it will run with starting fluid. I need some ideas of what might be going wrong. Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks!

Sorry! 2001 B5.5 Passat GLX 4motion V6.

I would imagine if there was an injector problem, it would run, just rough unless all of them were not working. Does that ever happen? Something causes them all to stop working at the same time?

How would I check that? Would it throw a code? The only code I have gotten since clearing them is because the MAF is disconnected, because it is so I could spray starting fluid in.

How do I check the injectors?

You could start by checking some voltages.

While cranking the engine: (With everything connected, including the fuses)
What is the voltage between ground and each side of fuse #28 ?
What is the voltage between ground and each side of fuse #29 ?
What is the voltage between ground and each side of fuse #34 ?

With the ignition on, what is the voltage between ground and each side of fuse #32 ?
With the ignition on, what is the voltage between ground and each side of fuse #7 ?

The ESS is a likely suspect.

Remove the timing belt covers and check the timing belt.

My 1c guess is a busted timing belt.
If, the belt and pulleys / tensioner are intact record the cylinder compression readings.
