Hi all,
Is anyone in MTL area with Passat 2005 TDI wagon?
did you do any mods? any poics?
got question abt timing belt: my passat has now a bit over 120K km and i belive the timing belt was never done, should i start looking into changing it? if yes, does anyone recommend a garage, besides the dealers.

thanx

If your timing belt was never changed and it's at 120k km I would stop driving the car and get it done ASAP.

There's a few shops around that are good like Auto Strasse, maybe DM Motorports.
You need to go over to Fred's site for Canadian TDI folks:

http://www.tdiclub.com/
Not in Montreal, but 2 hours north-west in Ottawa...

As the previous message suggested, there is a much more active Passat TDI community over at tdiclub.com. Your questions are VERY MUCH going to be answered over there. For example, do you know anything about the Balance Shaft Module (BSM), and the risk of the chain-drive on it to fail? Come read about BSM over at tdiclub. :poke:

But yes, there are a few of us diesel Passat owners around you that browse PassatWorld.

Oh, by the way, 120K km is the published mileage for the Timing Belt job. But please read about the BSM, as you have to do Timing Belt to reach the BSM, and the BSM is expensive... (but failure is way more expensive).
ok, this morning 5:30am dropped the car @ the garage to fix the TB. the good stuff is the mechano has 35 yrs exp in VW. his specility are diesels. i have couple of my collegues that recommended me to him, all of them have great experiance with him. plus he always does alittle more than what's on the paper.
i will let you know the outcome once i got my baby back.
ok, TB. water pump, A/C belt + tensioner have been changed.
he showed me the old belts and it seems as they were not used up so much, however since history of TB change is not available to me, he said it's better to change than be sorry later. < some of you ,ur own words !!! and i shall be thankfull for that !). so for now i'm ok.

Question about performance:
some people i know, mentioned to me about chip in the car, to get better torque, HPs and fuel economy.
I was looking into it and frankly, i'm confused  ,
the car is not manual, its tiptronic.
how can i get better fuel economy with the chip if i'm increasing the HPs???
looking on the long run, will the chipping may cause other issues in future? i don't necessairy want to spend thounsands of $$ for something i shouldn't have to do in 1st place.

Question about lights:

I was looking into converting the regular headlights into HIDs.
i know that i can not run HID as DLs (day light), beacuse these are not ment for it.
So i was wondering to keep my fogs on during day and use the HID at night.
( i seeit on some audi's, used to have it on my old Golf 2001).
my question is: To have the HIDs should i get myself the Euroswitch?
if yes, could someone point me where can i get the switch within Canada?
thanx

Salut again!

Nice to see you got the timing belt done! Although I see you now have another problem of high idle. As others have suggested on your other thread head on over to tdiclub.com and see what they say over there. They're very passionate people over at that site and know a lot about the TDI's. They should be able to help you.

As for the chip: I just got mine done in the summer (1.8T but same idea) at Unitronic. Their HQ is in Laval but they have dealers across the globe. If you search the name over at montrealracing.com you'll see that everyone who has chips from them loves it and loves their service and support. They sponsor a lot of great Canadian shows and also have booths at Waterfest and the such...

Here's the gains you can expect for your car (2005 Passat TDI)

http://www.unitronic-chipped.com/ma...2005_volkswagen_passat_20l_tdi-pd_134hp_.html

Stock is:
134HP/247 LB-TQ

And chipped is:
169HP / 305 LB-TQ

A good improvement I think!

I friend of mine had two Jetta TDI's (a MK4 and MK5) that were both chipped Unitronic and they were great! A lot of power.

I'm not positive on how they get more fuel economy out of doing the chip but I can attest to it happening and I've seen it on my friend's TDI's (1000+km on a tank were not uncommon on the MK4 even with spirited driving).

If you have any more questions I suggest emailing Unitronic directly to get more feedback; they'll be able to answer your questions better than I can.

[email protected]

The only problem I see that happened with my friend's car (the MK4; manual transmission) was that the clutch started to slip because of the torque so he had to upgrade to a VR6 clutch. Although his MK5 is DSG and he hasn't had any problems. I'm not sure how the tiptronic would react to 305lb/ft but just email Uni and you'll see what they say about it!

Elliott
hey Elliot,
nice to hear from you.
the chip will have to wait. first thing is to change/ upgrade the pesky lights.
it is no use for me to drive like "lamborgini car" if i can't even see properly @ nights and evenings or early very early morning going to work. Plus i have a 9 month BB in my rear.
so i ordered the euroswitch, then will make move for HIDs.
which bring me to another questions, what HID conversion kit should i aquire. I'm not sure what kind of headlights i have.how do i know i have projectors vs regular headlight assembly?
i'm visual person, meaning once i see the image i know very well where i stand.

As for the high RPM/ fuel consumption, i will drop by the mechanic as he suggested and will try to have that higher RPM solved. i have feelings is just matter of adjusting somethng.

Also, on another note, do we have any meetup in MTL area? i would love to meetup with some of Passatworld members to get know each other and perhaps discover other mods i can put into my list.

regards,

You have projector headlights, all 2001.5+ Passats do, order a H7 Bulb HID kit.

Get a 35 Watt Kit if you plan on using the stock wiring, or get 55W kit if you plan on installing HIDs with the relay harness

Hey what kind of headlights do the B5's have? And what HID kid would you recommend for them?

As for the meet-ups in MTL, it's usually German night on Tuesdays at the Orange Julep on decarie!

Restaurant Orange Julep
7700 Boulevard Décarie
Montréal, Quebec H4P 2H4, Canada

There probably won't be any cars there this time of year though since everyone puts them away but sometimes when it snows the guys with Audi's and AWD usually go there to have some fun I think.

To get more info I would check out montrealracing.com like I said in my previous post and check out the "Meets / Shows / Julep" forum and also the "Volkswagen/Euro" forum.

I'm blanking out here, I dont remember what the other type headlights are, but they are not projector lights.

The old b5s have regular lights. You can still stick an HID kit into there, but those are the type of people that blind you on the road cause the light is not directed properly.

Same thing applies for B5s 35w to 55w.

The stock halogen bulbs are 55w as well, but I would not put a 55w kit on there without a harness.
I think the other type of headlights are called reflectors.

Toronto5.5 helped me install my HID's and I'm really happy with them.

Btw, George, can we solder the other light connector thing sometime soon (like we did on the driver's side)? The passenger side is flickering a bit on the cold on start-up.

Sure that can be arranged.

Sounds good! My next couple weeks are crazy because of upcoming exams and such. All of them are condensed together. You pretty busy with school too?
hi guys,
after having sort of nightmare dreams abt how to get the freaking Relay 173 out , i finally got the sucka yesterday. No HIDs yet, but for what is worth, my DRLs r out.

Now looking for HIDs.i saw many on ebay and others sites, but i'm not sure which brand is good in terms of lifespan?
Bonbo,Xenon, Piaa, Henon,
I see bunch of HIDs from China ( no offense to any chinese user and my wife!) but i rather refrain from chinese kit)
I'm bringing my car to garage nxt week (tuesday) for the RPM issues, change oil, and if i have the kit, might as well install for me. ( hitting many birds with 1 stone)

please advise.
There is a group buy kit on this site under the group buy section, it is a VVME kit.

I have had it over a year now without any problems whatsoever.

Get that kit. its only 50 bucks.
There is a Group Buy for HID kits, but yes they are made in China... (oops, Toronto5.5 just said the same!)

However, experience with these is good so far. I have had them for more than a year now, and they work great. Your B5.5 (post-2001) will use H7 bulbs. The kit sold here, and also directly from the vendor, is VVME. You can go to www.vvme.com and look at all the components. Bulb temperature gives the colour, "stock" is around 4300k, then towards blue/purple at 5000k and higher. Don't get fooled into the 6000k+ as they do NOT put as much VISIBLE light output.
hello
this morning i ordered the h7-35w-5K kit from vvme.com

ishipping will be on monday or tuesday and should arrive in 3-4 days.

looking forward to install new eyes!

Awesome! I think you'll be pleased. I have the 6K kit and really like them.
