Just wondering if there are any former MK3 jetta or golf drivers that converted to the passat like me. I still have my old MK3 and I am starting a big project with it and would like some input from any former drivers or if you still have drive one. my plans for it are show and track.

so far my plans are
roll cage
build the 2.slow because that would be fun
convert to 2 door
and go full euro on the outside
its going to be a long project but i really want something thats cheaper to build than a passat and a car thats not my daily driver.

I'm just wondering who had built an MK3 and what you thought of it.
Any input of your ideas would be nice, tell me what you think.

I had a 99 MKIII Wolfsburg Jetta...2.Slow when I got her and I just did minor upgrades. Exhaust, intake, wheels, suspension...just little things. I still loved her to death though.

Got rid of her becuase I wanted a bigger car...

former MKIII er here. It was my 1st VW. made it into mags with it. Also was the 1st with all the plans to do a 2 door conversion. I ened up parting it, and gave all the info to my buddy Eddie who made the 1st (in NA at least)

Highlights of mine
Corrado speed sensitive wing (actually speed sensitive) (1st one done)
6 speed tranny in a 2.0 (one of 5)
4 heated GLX buckets(1st done)
TT console/ shifter(1st done)

Also:
Echo of Gecko
RG3
Pat Cosgrove
Atobahn 96
TCM GLX all have had MKIII's as weill  (and All had some sort of mag coverage too )

If you were on vortex yars ago, you may remember alot of us.

Mk2 for me. We had an 86 Wolfsburgh Golf that we bought brand new. Got rid of it after we had 2 kids and could not fit in it with car seats. Fun to drive, but the 1.8 with an automatic was pretty slow.

I had a Mk III for about 4 years ('97). It takes a ton of $ to build up that 2.slow......the Neuspeed supercharger for it, iirc, only gets its horsepower up to 180......they claim 50% more horsepower; which it comes stock at 120 I think.

Had to get rid of her cause I had to entertain clients, and I doubt they would have liked the wheels, lowering or exhaust ;)

the 6 speed was made local, and I had NO issues with it. When I parted my car the guy who bought it ended up with some issues and the developer didn't help him out, so I would not suggest geting one (if the guy is even still around) this was back in 98/99 ish so it has been a long time.

For the shifter suff, we machined a plate to mount the round TT boot shifter etc in it. (I wanted it since I truely had a 6 speed) at shows I would leave it in 6th to freak people out ;) I know I have picts of all parts of that car, but I have to find them.

I miss my MK3, Angie was her name. Sometimes I forget how much work (and money) I invested in her. At the time, it was one of only a couple Golfs in the states with a European hatch, and according to Schmidt, it was the first VW in the states to have the 3pc Schmidt Modern Lines. In fact, I think it's still on Schmidt's web-site when you look up that model of wheel. Here's an overview of the mods...

1996 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Exterior

? Euro spec front and rear bumpers
? Euro spec radiator support
? 2dr "CL" textured side molding
? Euro spec GTI VR6 front lip spoiler
? Euro spec rear hatch
? Euro spec turn signals
? InPro smoked E-code Vento headlights
? Votex wide foglights
? Jetta hood
? Jamex hood lifts
? Mattig badgeless Vento grill
? Mattig Vento grill spoiler
? Hella clear tail lights
? Shaved rear emblems and wiper
? Honda S2000 antenna mast
? Matching Munich plates

Interior/I.C.E.

? Custom black leather
? European spec console
? European spec glove box
? Fischer center console CD box
? Momo leather shift knob
? Evolution Audi TT pedals
? Momo leather shift boot
? Polished door pins
? Kenwood MASK CD player
? European spec light switch

Engine

? Techtonics 'zorst w/Volvo S80 tip
? Techtonics chipped ECU
? Techtonics short shifter
? 1.5" shortened shift lever
? Turn 2 Poly motor mount
? Torque AG heat sheild
? Matrix cone filter

Supension/Brakes

? KW Varient 2 Adjustable Coilovers
? VW Motorsports poly bushings
? ABD front strut tower brace
? Autotech hallow rear anti swaybar
? 16x8" (front) and 16x9" (rear) Schmidt Modern Line 3pc wheels
? 205/40-16 (front) and 215/40-16 (rear) Yokohama A520 tires
? Ate slotted rotors
? Mintex Red Box brake pads

Here it is with the factory European molding and flares...

Here's a rear shot, from WAY back, when I still had the ATS Planets and the H&R Cup Kit...

Sigh. :(

When I get back to the states I am planning on getting an IY or JB 20th or a TR .:R32. But as a daily driver I think I am going to pickup a VR6 MKIII GTI...preferably in Ginster Yellow.

I figured the 2.slow would be an up hill battle but i dont wanna convert to VR6 i would just buy one and i dont wanna convert to 1.8t. the motor is going to be stroked, headwork done and turboed not sure what turbo yet i may start with a gt28r to break it in and see what that has for potential eventually i want over 300 whp out of it, its a high goal but it'll be fun along the way. as the car sits right now it has exhaust, intake, techtonics chip, alloys, red/white tails, and driving lights for the fogs. nothing much but it was a fun car that i miss. it also has a blown tranny the "new" one goes in soon and then back on the road, then the interior will be gutted and then to the fab shop for the roll cage and racing seats. by the way the "new" temp tranny is out of an 87 jetta 1.8l 8v thats going to need some work to fit right, but hey it was free and its still good.

My MkIII was one of the most warrantied cars in the history of VWoA. Everything broke once.

We traded it on our MkIV, but looking back (hindsight is 20/20), if I had known we were moving to MI with the incredible VW community up here, I'd have kept it, done a trans swap, and had a little go-kart/beater. I kind of miss its simplicity.

I personally really like MkIII cars, Jetta or Golf. They are easy to work on compared to other VWs and you can have fun with them.

I also think building a 2.0 would be fun, if not very fast. But the ABA 2.0 is built like a brick shithouse and when you get ahold of a good running one, it makes you think of the old 16v engines except with regard to the last 500 rpm, which you could probably help with some porting...
