Another key thread but with a twist. Key starts the car but doesn't unlock the doors

Hi all,

I just bought my son a 2006 passat over the weekend and the key fob doesn't lock or unlock the doors or pop the trunk. It does start the car which is great. It also doesn't have the actual key with it. The doors lock and unlock with the button in the car so I'm guessing that it's a fob communication issue. The battery has been changed and the light flashes when you press buttons, nothing further. Is it possible to reprogram myself or do I need to buy a new key through volkswagen?

Thank you!

Someone could have changed the ignition switch and taken the RFID chip out of the old key and put it in the new one. When you say the key does not unlock the door or trunk, you mean the key portion, right? If it's just the fob that lost it's programming, I think that's easy to do.
Thank you for the response. The key part of the key fob is not with us. We only have the fob.

If you have a trapezoidal shaped remote, it has the little ring on the end, that is the key.

It starts the car, that is the good part. Find someone with VCDS and the remote can be programmed back to the car for remote keyless entry.
The little ring is not there unfortunately. It's just the plastic fob...
