I JUST (two days ago) bought a 2000 1.8t passat with 108k on it. I was reading some threads earlier today about TRE and figured i'd try to check my own. In doing so i found that the drivers side axle (i think it's the axle... it's a black painted shaft towards running perp to the wheel, looks sturdier than any of the A-frame members and TRE) has long cracks running parallel to the shaft... I didn't take the tire off yet so I couldnt really get in there to check it out, but i'm hoping they're superficial and only through the paint. Has anyone heard of this kind of thing before? If so, how much do you think it would cost to repair?

I'll try and get some pics up when it's not dark out.

and when replacing an axle be sure not to forget the threadlocker on those bolts:nervous: or they will come out and this will happen.

Thanks guys. Yeah me and my dad went out and checked it out again confirming that it was only the paint. As useful as this forum has been so far, it's also a great source of paranoia for my new car ;)

Viper, how did you shear off your axle?
