if by practical you mean cheap, the aftermarket cd/mp3 player is definately the way to go. But the benefit to an ipod is the number of songs you can have, i.e. your entire library with you!! Plus, you can keep the OEM equipment. I went with the iPod:

I have a Pioneer 7500 Mp3/WMA/XM radio.

My buddy has a iPod that he uses in conjunction with the stock monsoon system.

I don't mind burning Cds and the aftermarket head unit is much better in almost every way. Plus XM tuning is built in.
I find that I listen to XM more than Cds at this point.
Then again, when I listen to a cd, each cd has 5 or 6 albums burned to it in MP3 format.
While driving, it's easier to use the Pioneer MP3 player. jumping from folder to folder is a piece of cake. The iPod requires a bit more attention.
