I know the ads are supporting the passatworld forums, which I'm eternally grateful for. However they make me nervous about drive by downloads -

Especially since a few minutes ago Chrome blocked a passatworld forum page - saying the page could be dangerousness. - http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://www.dp6061.com/temp/wagon_01.jpg&client=googlechrome&hl=en-US

I've seen lots of drive by downloads, and in fact I've had one of my work computers infected by just doing some web surfing researching a problem and BAM infected!, luckily it was a sacrificial computer - I didn't care about any data so I just re imaged it and was back up in 20 minutes.)

Just saying, be careful out there. :hmmm:

as i can see that this is still a valid thread/sticky people can post in, i believe it would be acceptable to make a plug for this program:

adblock plus.

by using this simple program, you can completely remove any risk of outside content being downloaded, as this blocks outside content in whole.

follow instructions, and you'll be a LOT safer off!

Having worked in a computer repair shop, I can definately say malware sometimes "just happens," and happens frequently. But from my own personal experience, I've never had that problem.

One solid piece of advice: don't click on random links unless they can provide a better result than going to Google and searching for your page of choice, which takes all of 5 seconds.

I had problems with adblock on a mac. I am running Firefox 4.07b, when i installed the adb i noticed a big drop in browsing speed. Uninstalled resulted in a broken adobe flash plugin, crashing ever so often and causing me to reload pages. So might have to try something other than that.

I downloaded Ad Block Plus but didnt like it so I tried another... Ad Blocker... for FF. I like it a lot better than ABP. Just giving an alternative in case someone has a problem with ABP.

I also installed FlashBlock for FF and it makes browsing much nicer.

For those using Firefox, I have found NoScript to be very useful, especially since the most recent version of FF does not support Ad Blocker.

OK, I'm on vacation and my wife brought along an old work laptop, so I installed Chrome just for the week so I could actually access email, +, and FB. No ad blocker, so this is the first time I've actually seen these ads on PW. "Public records", "Divorce records", "Criminal records?" What is this shit? I can understand car ads for non-VWs, but this seems - evil.
