ABS/ASR Light Stays On? What is the cause?

Afternoon all,

I have a 2005 1.8T b5.5 that I purchased about two years ago, no issues other than a coolant leak, until today. I drove the car to the store, no problem. Get back in the car and as I pull out I hear the malfunction alarm, the red BRAKE light is flashing, and the ABS and ASR lights are on and staying on. I have no idea what it could be because I just had my brakes replaced a few months ago so there shouldn’t be any issue. Car drove fine on the way home.

Any thoughts appreciated!

ABS control module failures are common. (Been there ... done that myself.)
Run a VCDS scan and report back.

LOL well I got in my car today to go to the store and it came on at first, and went off as I started driving. Hasn’t given me any issue today.
If it starts happening more and more and you can't figure out why (no codes - check in VCDS, module inaccessible, etc) then the module may be going bad. That happened to me and I replaced it with a used one from ebay that had some markings on it that indicated it was already repaired. These ABS modules have some hair thin wires that can break loose, see here for example. It was hard to replace because I had to drill a hole through the wheel well to access one of the screws and there was limited clearance, see here for more info.

Also, I own a B6 and its ABS module started throwing internal error codes right before one of the ABS sensors went bad. Only several days later did it throw codes that a sensor was bad. The ABS module was fine in that case. So, after checking codes the next thing I would do is confirm that the ABS sensors are actually giving good output.

Been there ... done that. Had to buy two used replacement modules, because the first didn't work. eBay seller was very cooperative, refunded my money and let me keep the unit, so I can always send it in to a place that does the resoldering. Very common problem.

I had a good experience with Module Master’s rebuild of my Bosch 5.7 for my 2005 wagon. Two or three years and no issues since
