Ok here goes,
I have a little situation and am looking for some advice.
My elderly father in law lives with us and has developed a nasty little 'habit'
He has his own room with all amenitys, kind of like a hotel room.
I installed a pc for him "To keep in contact with his family"
He is very deaf.
His PC is connected to the outside world via my wirless linksys router WRT54G.
Any ways, he has developed this habit for downloading porn. Not just pictures but full blown screaming sex vids.
Everynow and then he thinks the house is empty and up goes the volume.
I swear I thought he had an 18 year old porn star in his room this morning. She was screaming her lungs out in there.
Now he is 78 so I have no doubt it was not a live person.

My question is, we are pretty disgusted but do not know how to approach the subject.
I would like to block his acsess to porn but am not sure how to do it or if I even can.
I have no control over his pc but is there away I can block it via the router?
Any help greatly apriciated, my wife is really freaking out.
But good god it's her father, can't she speak to him?

You installed the PC? Install Net Nanny on it.

Or give him headphones.

This is actually quite funny, from a non-participant standpoint. :)

Don't take away the old man's porn. Are you concerend that your connection is being used for that and you will get in trouble? I would just disable the speakers.

Hell, yes! :D

If he's turning the speakers up, he can hear a bit. The headphones are the safest idea for not pissing him off, but no guarantee he'll remember to put them on.

Rusty's right - you got him the computer and set it up, put something on there that reminds him to turn down the volume or etc. before downloading. Or just lock out the porns sites.

Lol, can I lock him out of porn via the wireless though?

Dude, taking his porn away is just mean. I bet you if you let him know you can hear the screaming of the porn, he will take care of the problem

I think a healthy disscussion on your privacy and his ettiqutte is the way to go.

And keep him away from the senior citizen center. LOL

not with that router. I havent seen any SOHO routers with this feature. Essentially you need to setup a proxy server for him to surf through, which would apply the filter rules: ala WebSense(tm) or other similar products.

While I somewhat agree with the others about a headset; there is the issue that some of the content could be illegal. You might want to Google around for an open source or otherwise cheap/free "web proxy filter" -- that is if you don't block it from the computer directly.

This is the best answer so far. He is an adult....so just let him know that you can all hear it and you would prefer if he used the headphones so that he can keep this all in the privacy of his own hand!

You can set up monitoring logs through most home broad band routers. Turn on the logs and it will track websites visited. You can also perform simple blocking on keywords in the URL based on those sites. That might be enough to deter him.

Although, the man is an adult and probably bored out of his wits... perhaps headphones might be the better choice?
