I just purchased a 2003 Passat GLX 2.8L V6 with a manual transmission. The vehicle has 51,000 miles on it. I noticed some gear oil on my driveway the day after I brought it home, so I took it to my mechanic to get it checked out. He said there is a small leak at the transmission where the shifter linkage goes in.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? Could it just be overfilled or something? Does the transmission need to be removed in order to replace that seal/gasket?

I am working on getting it back to the used car dealership since i have a 3 month warranty, but they've gotten scarce all of a sudden (imagine that), so I am just trying to see what kind of labor is involved.

Thanks in advance.

The same thing on mine was leaking a long time ago (1999, 1.8t, manual trans). A shop doing work on the car saw the problem and replaced the seal. I don't think they had to pull the trans to do it.
