Hi, I'm new here. I used the Advanced Search but couldn't find a topic related to mine. I'm in the US (Indiana) and have a 2015 Limited Edition with the 2015 1.8L DI Turbo DOHC 4cyl engine. Back in October 2020, at 59.5K, my 6-speed Automatic Transmission failed and was replaced at the dealer under warranty (had to pay $1k - under miles, but 3 mths over 36mth limit). Since then, we're at 65.5K miles and we heard a loud, strange tapping sound. The dealer (Andy Mohr Avon) found a lose bolt at (I believe) the torque converter and will retighten it under the replacement transmission warranty. However, they informed me it was caused by a failing crankshaft in the engine - apparently the crankshaft is moving too much - I guess vibrating too much. They told me it will fail at any time and that I need a new or replacement engine. Has anyone heard of this issue? I've asked if there's a simpler fix than replacing the entire engine, but don't know the answer to that, yet. Any assistance appreciated.

I asked couldn't they simply replace the crankshaft bearings and that it shouldn't be an overly complex repair. The crankshaft should be accessible easy by removing the oil pan and it should take more than 3 or 4 hours - maybe a $1000 parts and labor. They claim it's 20 hours work, they have to replace the crankshaft itself, not just the bearings and they no longer have crankshaft parts available (they quite making them for P7 1.8t engines - yeah right). They want $4000 to replace with a used engine with 40k miles on it w/ a 12mth/12k mile limited warranty. What do you guys/gals recommend I do? Keep fighting to VW? Hire a lawyer? Take it to an engine shop elsewhere? Their offering to give me $10K in trade-in (I owe somewhat more of course) so for the same money I'm looking at downgrading to a 2017 Jetta w/ 50k miles - not a great set of options....lovely. Any ideas appreciated.
