Hi all!

So I just took my Passat into the shop because my engine light came on and it was code P0442. I got the purge valve replaced so they did a more thorough inspection and found out that the 'breather' near the gas tank needed to be replaced and quoted me at $1,000 to get it done.

The part they are replacing is Part # 561201995, but it feels quite expensive for such a small fix. Has anyone had this done to their car before? The part is cheap but quoted me that much because of labor I would assume.

A smoke test should reveal a leak. What did they do to come up with that as the cause? Gas cap sealing ok?

I had the same issues even after I replaced the valve. Should I take it to a mechanic for the smoke test or try anotherc valve? Also the end of my hose on then left has a crack and it’s covered by some strong tape.
