yep, that is part of the CV axle itself and unlike the B5 & B5.5s which bolt up these have a little spring clip which snaps into a corresponding groove in the transaxle drive itself. This is similar to all other makes like GM etc. They are a bitch, and if you look at your piece still in the transmission you will notice little (real small) upset/grooves about midway on it,these are for the VW tool (which no one has of course) to grip, with that said, what needs t be done is to preload that piece outward putting pressure on the inner snap ring....... then with some sort of impact "reverse" wacked to pop it out of the groove......I believe Advance Auto, O'Reillys, Auto Zone one of those three rents a CV/Axle removal kit...probabaly all the same kit, that is where I would start.........Here are some things you need to be really aware of ,be careful where you pry on on differential/tranny case you can easily pop a hole in it in a thin diecast area, next before you take it out (and you will get it out) take a measurement of its location/distance from the housing itself, drill bit/pencil/pice of wood, off hand I want to say about 3/8 of an inch......the reason being many people push the axle in and do not get in far enough for that f'in pita snap ring to engage which becomes a disaster in waiting....... I anticipate doing mine on my 08 in spring or sooner so let me know how it works out for you, I did inquire at Advance the have a kit but not sure if all the pieces parts include in it will do the job......hang in there and keep me posted ,regards Chief

(and you will get it out)
These words have run in my ears for the past two days. I finally, FINALLY, got the inner bell off of the transmission this afternoon. I went and rented the crappy puller kit they had at AutoZone (it didn't have the pickle-fork style plate...don't bother if it doesn't BTW...).

In the end I figured out that I could use the end of a flatbladed screwdriver that had the handle broken off (Lord knows *why* I kept it for the past 25 years), and used it to keep the inner bell from twisting perpendicular to the axle shaft. I inserted a small pry-bar coming up from the bottom and got it in there and gave a few good whacks. Once I had the screwdriver blade on the opposing side that I was applying hits to, the inner CV bell actually popped out quite easily.

This was AFTER TWO FREAKING DAYS of trying to pull it out as an assembly with ratchet straps, etc. Ultimately the inner joint failed and the shaft did separate under pulling tension. Getting the small screwdriver blade in there to act as a shim was the only thing that ended up working.

YMMV

But to Chief, seriously, thank you. Those words did keep me going as option after option didn't work. :salute::wrench::):bowdown:

hopefully you have/had a measurement of how far (inner cone) is/was from case ,I know a lot of people have pushed it in and think it has snapped in place when in reality have it slip out only after a few drive cycles wreaking havov.......with that said on the one (cone) that you took out, is there some "upset" grooves that are on the circumference of it, this is for my future reference as to making up a puller for me and to lend out, thanks in advance, regards Chief
