I have a 2004 Passat that exhibits the following symptoms:
Normal Conditions – Codes are 0 and operating normally
Idle – 800 rpm

Failure symptoms:
Runs good for about 5-10 minutes
Then the engine hesitates but continues running
Idle goes up to 1200 RPM
EPC light goes on a few minutes later
It may restart if shut down for a short time
Will not start after sitting for a while
Numerous attempts to need to be made to start the car however, it does finally start after about 15 minutes with 6 or 7 attempts about 2-3 minutes apart then it starts like nothing has happened.

Codes Displayed:
P0322 Every time
P0171 Seldom
P0321 One time
P0131 One time

Parts replaced:
Crankshaft position sensor
Fuel pump

I think that I have a problem with a sensor, but without changing them all I do not know where to start. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Double-check Engine Speed Sensor/ Crank Position Sensor install & wiring.
Check for vacuum leaks.
Might fill in more details, what engine, (1.8t, 2.8). How long have you owned the car?

Thanks for your reply. The engine is a 1.8t and I've only had it for a few months. It has 292,000 miles, runs very well and has been extremely well maintained. I've checked the Engine Speed Sensor/ Crank Position Sensor several times so, I don't think that this could be the cause of the problem. I have not checked for vacuum leaks though. Are there any sources of possible vacuum leaks that are difficult to get to?
