I've recently purchased a 2004 GLX 4motion automatic.

I've noticed a "clunk", it feels almost like it's dropping in and out of gear REALLY hard. Sort of like it shifts out of 2nd and misses 1st gear, and then it catches really hard.

It seems to do this when I'm slowing down to a complete stop from a moderate speed, or if I have to quickly slow down, and then start back up without coming to a full stop.

I doesn't seem to happen if I slow the car almost all the way, and then ease off, and then break just enough to allow to car to almost stop itself.

Now, the car doesn't do this every time I hit a stop light or stop sign, but when it does it it's very noticible and I can really feel it when it happens, it doesn't sound very pleasant for the car.

You are catching the tranny during the downshift... rather you are hitting the gas AS the tranny is shifting from 2 to 1, thus the clunk. The TIP tranny is annoyingly slow when downshifting from 2 to 1. A couple of solutions. One, get used to it. Many of us have, and it just doesn't happen. Two, drive in TIP mode, so oyu control the shifting. Three, get a TIP chip. It's an after market program for the tranny computer. It decreases the shift times from ~1 second to ~.2 seconds. This reduction all but removes the chance of you 'causing' this behavior.

None of the above are a great solution, but they are the only one available. You'll most likely get used to it, and adjust without even knowing it... now that you know what's causing it.

Yeah, unfortunately I think that pass-variant is right. I have a 2000 4Motion and experience the same thing. My choice to date has been to "get used to it" It is most present and annoying when coming to a stop for a stop light that changes before you get stopped. At the interval between the 2 to 1 downshift if you hit the gas there is a hesitation and then "wham" it catches. I may just look into that TIP chip after all.

I have the 2004 GLX (front wheel drive) Auto. I find that as downshifting from 3 -> 2 (even with Tip) i get a flutter in the brake pedal :( It also shifts a little rough from 2 -> 1 though also. I called my dealership they said the end of Feb is a new firmware for the tip chip. It isn't shifting faster but it might address this problem. So in a few weeks call yours and see what they say about the new software.

I'm interested, but does this void the warantee on the entire tranny or just the TCU, or the whole computer? I have a 100k mile warantee that I don't want to void ... it's breaking my heart competing with 1sec shifts

This seems to be a VW problem. Check out these other web sites.
You all need to register a compalint with National VW and the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. and then they will expedite a software computer fix. We can't complain into a vacuum. 1-800-822-8987 for VW customer service. They need to hear from all of us.

NO...NO...NO! Not 2nd to 1st  . I always let it downshift on it's own from 2nd to 1st. The other gears it's OK and on my car is really smooth, but it doesn't take well to that last downshift.

shifts on my '03 4mo are rough as hell. it sucks. its never really been smooth.

even brand new, there is a clunk in the system when going from a dead stop (like first time in the day) to moving.

the 4mo is a bag-o-gears-n-stuff and you just have to get used to it. its just not designed to be a smooth mercedes or anything close..

It may just be your quatt, errh, ah, 4Motion drivetrain. Having had a couple of q's (although both were manuals), they exhibited something similar to what you're describing, although IIRC, 4Mo doesn't use a Torsen.

Having both front _and_ rear suspensions on subframes, and a center diff, and a rear diff, and a long driveshaft with multiple universals, and enough compliance to help absorb unnecessary driveline shock, and - well you get the idea.

Call it tolerance stack-up, or slop, or engineered design, or what-have-you.

Or then again, it may be something completely different :)

The 4MOTION on the Passats is a Torsen system, just like the Audi quattros...it's the 4MOTION system on the R32 (and other non-B5 applications, though any others are escaping me) that use Haldex.

Chris didn't mention one other possible solution, which is to use the VAG-COM to reprogram the TCM. I have absolutely no idea where the thread is on how to do that, but someone did figure it out and was successfully able to reprogram their TCM such that they had essentially had a Tip Chip installed. You'll have to do some searching...

FWIW, I have the Tip Chip and occasionally if I'm not paying attention, I'll catch the car while it's in the middle of that 2-to-1 downshift, hit the gas, then get nailed by that thunk.

I'd be curious to hear from 4mo owners with the tip chip if it did solve this. It's a little uneasy at first to hear the clunk, but after a while you get used to it.

There you go. And BTW, I have 4MOTION...sorry, didn't realize that wasn't clear when I first posted...

I have the TIP chip in my '01 FWD, and it doesn't eliminate the "thunk" from 2 to 1, but does improve the overall shifting in both Auto and in TIP. I know others who still have it even with the chip; I think it's just a VW quirk, and I've learned to live with it (doesn't happen often though).

My W8 4mo does the same thing. I just deal with it
I just got my W8 around 2 weeks ago. Sounds like I have the same thing. I'm dealing with it but I've trying to drive a little more conservative
to see if that helps. sometimes yes and sometimes no.

I have noticed if I'm in tiptronic mode, i don't have the thunk. only in automatic (I'm I using these terms right ? )

I found in one of the websites Mapbabe had a link to : http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=186003

In there they say we should do a petition (i wonder if petitions ever work, I never hear the outcome).

Has anyone called the toll free VW# to complain???

After I saw this on another site I called my dealer and they are aware of this. I am bringing the car in tomorrow to have them check it out....

Good News:
The factory has a solution for the "bumping/lurching" problem we are experiencing at times when slowing to a stop. Within 30 days, the new software fix will be available to us through your local VW service provider. I understand and believe that this is not a mechanical problem and is software related.

The midwestern states QTM (Quality Technical Manager) Evan, says that the problem with the triptronic is software related and the fix will be available within 30 days. The re-programming takes about 10 minutes, so figure about 1 - 2 hours.

For verification you can contact your VW service provider and ask him/her to verify with VW midwest rep QTM Evan.
