anybody know if the tranny has a separate refill port, or is the only way to refill tranny is through the overflow port. I drained 4 quarts, but could only get 2 quarts of ATF back in through the inspection port. After I cycle through all the gears, should I leave the engine running while I add more ATF ? thanks, larry
transmission is to be filled, topped off, while the engine is running in park. The pan must be at the correct temperature to confirm the fill level. Based on your question, I think you got into this task without the proper amount of homework.
thanks Mtech--I accidentally drained the tranny fluid intending to do an engine oil change! Thus no homework! But your video is great and I will follow it. Maybe I'm getting too old to try this stuff, but I have more time than money (I'm 72 and retired).
Well Larry, don't be so hard on yourself! many DIY'rs have made this mistake of mixing up the drain plugs. I once cracked the valve cover trying to install, it wouldn't seat because one of the stupid timing belt cover clips had snuck into the gap of the cover and head. I was lucky, I repaired the valve cover easily.
As you would know...Keep on doing, you'll never make the same mistake twice if you are really learning!
A few years ago when I hosted a Passat maintenance and light repair get together at my house, one of the local guys confessed that he had made precisely the same mistake and had needed to have the car towed to a dealership to refill the ATF.
Concur. Drain, drop pan, replace filter, and re-fill is what has worked for me. For the first ATF change on each car I did as you suggest, with good results. On the second fluid change on the A4, I tried a simple drain-and-fill w/o the pan drop, after which it shifted terribly and revved between gears. I immediately followed up with a full pan drop and filter change, which restored proper function.
This is old but I have to say go in this direction, considered running car with pan off, or disconnecting return atf cooler line from (top*) radiator. * Top needs to be confirmed.
I thought I had a trans fluid leak, it was diesel fuel check valve at fuel filter.
