I finally have seen videos where other owners of 2002 2.8L Passats were able to remove the exhaust to manifold bolts, as difficult as it seems to be. Could someone tell me the best wrenchs or sockets to use to get to them the easist.

Thank you

It's not an easy task. I usually pull the intake snorkel off of the throttle body and reach the passenger side inside bolt that way. Then lower the rear of the subframe and remove the rest. It may be easier for you to remove the front axles to have more room to work. Some people use a series of long extensions for the upper bolts with the subframe lowered. You need a 13mm socket (or swivel socket) and a 13mm wrench. I use a 13mm ratcheting wrench and 13mm stubby wrench too.

The V6 generally does not blow head gaskets unless the engine was overheated. At that point, the heads may warp, so it's best to take them to a machine shop for measurement.

Since you are pulling the heads, once you remove the intake, coolant pipes, combi valves and SAIP pipe, you can easily reach the exhaust manifold bolts. Look in the Info Forum for my V6 coolant pipe seal DIY for details.

The machine shop should be able to machine them flat if they are warped, but I would not just replace the gasket without at least having the shop check the heads.
