18034 Electrical TCU problem?

19136 Views 10 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mrkazoo
So I've been trying to diagnose the source of this to no avail...

This is the error message from the vagcom for the ABS module:
18034 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from TCU
P1626 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I took the passenger side footwell apart and looked at the TCU and it seemed fine. Some of the wires were exposed but it didn't seem in bad shape. I do have it GIAC chipped with the tipchip but that has been for 10+ years now without an issue. I opened the TCU and the chip seems fine, everything seemed OK.

So, while driving, the problem has been getting worse but basically in auto mode, the car will have a real violent jerking especially when it's in 5th gear. I put it into tip mode and manually played with the gears and noticed that especially when its in 5th gear, the car will do the violent jerking to kick down to 4th. when in 4th its fine. I do notice that the PRND32 lights will get replaced for a split second before it does the transmission slip. Which I think explains that the car loses the electrical connection to the TCU and so the transmission goes beserk especially when its in the overdrive 5th gear.

Anyone have this problem before? It's such a difficult problem to diagnose. I can't exactly see what strand of wire is slightly off connection or if the TCU itself has a corroded connection or something that is causing this. Short of bringing it to a shop and letting them have a field day replacing everything, is there anything else I can look into to replace or bolster?

2001.5 B5.5 1.8T Tip

TIA.

Do a full scan and post codes (At least ECU, TCU, and ABS.
OK, the full scan is as below:

But just a FYI, I haven't cleared codes for 6 months and a lot of it was from way back. But this time, I cleared the codes after this scan just so I can see what comes back. Something I didn't mention is that the ASR light will come on and off periodically.

You didn't post TCU codes, are you able to scan it ?

Registered VCDS-Lite $99, will give you the code descriptions and other features, Ross Tech were allowing the $99 to go toward a full version if you later decide to upgrade.
No, I just have the shareware version. Don't have a need for the $99 version since I can actually find all the code descriptions on the net. But that aside, any other insights?

OK, here is the most recent codes. I cleared them and then drove around for a good hour running errands.

Here are the actual codes, which is what I suspected from before. How the heck am I supposed to found where the fault lies, within the tCU itself or one of the many wires going out of it? Or even one of the wires into the ECU?? Anyone have an electrical connection issue like this?

What do you mean by the TCU codes? Which option on VCDS is that?
There are no fault codes other than those two modules from that I posted. But here are the readings from 02:Auto Trans in any case.

Looks like I found the culprit. I swapped out my tip chip from GIAC with the original and the intermittent issues have stopped. Looks like the GiAC chip probably has bad soldering or needs to be fixed.

Anyone know if GIAC has a warranty on their chips?
