So I have an 02 passat GLS with a 1.8T. Just bought it less than a month ago. While test driving it got the infamous “low oil pressure” warning. Figured I’d replace the pickup tube once I got it home. Didn’t make it home and now I’m going to end up putting a used engine in it. Just curious what are some good supporting mods that maybe make a little more power but really help the longevity of the motor. Don’t want to end up in the same boat as I will be putting a used engine in it. Seems like a blow off valve, and catch can are 2 big ones. I can’t seem to find an easy catch can kit. Also what kind of exhaust is going to be best ? I don’t mind a little rumble
A blow off valve and catch can will have no bearing on the engine life at all. These engines cannot use a BOV. It must be a diverter valve that recirculates that air back into the intake.
Easiest longevity-related mod is a Mann 950/4 oil filter, which increases the oil capacity from 3.7 to 4.3 qts., while lowering oil temperature about 5 degrees, because the oversize filter acts like a larger heat sink. Obviously, frequent oil changes with a high quality synthetic meeting VW specs. are a given. Been doing all of the above since 2005 on my 2001 Passat.
