Hey guys I have a 04 passat with the 1.8t 4motion stick shift and it's starting to grind every time I downshift... trying to figure out where to start and how to diagnose if it's the synchro or something with the clutch? Thanks in advance for any help.

Usually when the clutch disk is at its end you get that symptom but it could also be the synchro as well.

I'm not an expert but I think every gear has its own synchro, so if it is happening in all gears it is probably the clutch. You could try accelerating hard with the car in 4th or 5th gear to test the clutch also. Usually, if the clutch is slipping it will slip first in the higher gears under a heavy load.

How many miles on the clutch? Are you sure the hydraulics are working correctly (fluid is full and no double-clutching needed)?

In the mean time, I'd stop down-shifting or let the engine rpm's drop until you can downshift without grinding. Replacing a clutch is a lot cheaper than replacing a tranny.
