I just did my front brakes for the first time after 12 years and 149k. Nothing of note other than the caliper pins were bone dry. You'd never be able to tell they had grease at all. Needless to say, I ran them in and out of the bushings a bunch to spread the new grease around. I think I...

I set about replacing the rear brake pads on my 2001 tonight. I was able to get the bolts out of the caliper guide pins on each side; but the top caliper guide pins on each side will not come out of the mounting bracket. They will turn but will not come out. I tried giving them a dose of...

I am planning to replace my front and rear brakes on my 2001 4-motion wagon. I've watched several youtube vids and noticed I got a piece of conflicting information. One video said the caliper pins could be removed with a T45 Torx bit and another said to use a 7mm hex bit. Which is it? Can I...

Trying to find any reference to the pins a MFSC (Steering Wheel Control) adapter would use going from the single din to a new Sony DVD aftermarket install on a 2001.5 Passat GLX. Metra Axxess says they have not tested their adapter with these cars. (The 2001.5 seems to be a mix of old B5 and...

Hey guys I'm new to PassatWorld and to car maintenance, so thought I'd share my experiences today with doing a brake service on a 1.8 20v B5. Rear disc/pad replacement went pretty smoothly. My friend came who is an experienced motor mechanic. The process seemed really straightforward, and he...

Just a simple reminder...my rear brakes never wear out...got over 70K on the current pads (which I last replaced just for the hell of it), and the pads still look good as new (Fronts were falling out of the calipers). But I took the pads out to check the guide pins again. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD...
